Trover Health System

Services & Procedures

The Mahr Cancer Center diagnoses more than 400 cancer patients each year. This translates to more than 13,000 patient visits annually. To help these patients fight the disease and cope with the diagnosis, the Mahr Center provides a wide range of services and technology.

Prevention Programs

The Mahr Center, as a service to the community, offers prevention and early detection programs, including screenings for colorectal cancer, prostate cancer and -in cooperation with the Hopkins County Health Department and the Trover Health System Center for Women's Health- a women's screening for cervical and breast cancer.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy treatments are delivered in our facility using state-of-the-art equipment. The Linac 2100 C treatment machine utilizes a Multileaf Collimnator (MLC) for the protection of healthy tissue. A new GE high resolution CT/SIM for treatment planning which allows physicians to view the tumor volume in three dimensions, enabling a more accurate treatment plan.

The Mahr Cancer Center is implementing Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). This therapy is becoming the standard for radiation treatment, and is the foundation for future technologies. An advantage over current radiation therapy is a more intense beam which spares the healthy tissue from the radiation dose, lessening the side effects for the patient.

The Tumor Registry

The registry is a computerized database that is connected to the Kentucky Cancer Registry system--a statewide system for collection of cancer data. All cancer cases diagnosed at Regional Medical Center are entered into the database.

Cancer Conferences are scheduled every Wednesday at noon. This provides the opportunity for a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and other cancer care providers to assemble and hear the physician discuss treatment options that are then presented to the patient by their physician.

Nutrition Services

Nutrition plays a very important role in the fight against cancer. For this reason, a registered dietitian is available to all Mahr Cancer Center patients.

Spiritual Services

Regional Medical Center employs a full-time chaplain who oversees the spiritual care of our patients. The Mahr Center is also fortunate enough to have dedicated volunteer chaplains and spiritual counselors who provide services to our patients exclusively.

Infusion Center

Mahr Outpatient/Infusion Center is dedicated to meeting the needs of patients from a variety of medical settings who require infusion services, including:

  • Injections
  • IV fluid administration
  • IV antibiotic administration
  • Blood and blood product transfusions
  • Blood draws from implanted venous access devices and PICCs

Nurses are available Monday through Friday starting at 8am to help patients get the treatments they need.

Chemotherapy

Our registered nurses are specially trained in the most current chemotherapy agents and regimens. They act as patient advocates by providing information regarding the disease and educating on the chemo process. Certified RNs, and over half with National Certification by the Oncology Nursing Society, provide treatment follow up to assess the patient's chemo process. These nurses also act as a patient liaison to the physicians.

Clinical Trials

We provide investigational studies, approved by the National Cancer Institute, to allow patients to have additional choices for treatment. These trials are provided at the Mahr Center, giving patients the opportunity to receive the benefits of clinical trials in their home town. A dedicated research associate follows all patients entered on clinical trials to ensure that all requirements are met.
