Rural Medicine Accelerated Track (RMAT)

Beginning with a 4 week summer preceptorship immediately after the M1 year, a small number of TRT students have the option to be considered for the Rural Medicine Accelerated Track (RMAT) which leads to completion of their medical degree in a total of three years.

This track for completion of medical school in 3 years saves a year of time and tuition, allowing the ULTC RMAT graduate to start residency a year earlier, earning a PG-1 salary and benefits. This net swing is almost $100,000. However, it is only for very motivated students who are sure they want to practice primary care in a small Kentucky town. It is a competitive process, with the decision made after the student has demonstrated solid academic progress in the first 3 semesters of medical school and outstanding performance during the RMAT1 and RMAT2 sessions completed after the M-1 year. Below are schematics of the traditional ULSOM schedule and the accelerated RMAT schedule.

Students selected for admission interviews in Madisonville as part of the ULSOM admission process may indicate their interest in RMAT and ask further questions at that time.
