Trover Health System

University of Louisville School of Medicine Trover Campus

In 1998, the University of Louisville School of Medicine began a regional campus by developing the Off-Campus Teaching Center at the Trover Health System in Madisonville, Kentucky.

The idea is simple: provide first-class, individualized clinical training in an environment that allows students to experience the benefits of small-town life. The goal, of course, is to increase the number of physicians in rural areas.

The key to the program is first-class training. If students decide during their training that small-town life is not for them, the Trover Campus will still prepare them for virtually any specialty they pursue.

The Trover Health System serves 12 counties (population 300,000) with a 75+ physician group practice including more than 28 specialties, a 410-bed hospital with 100 physicians on staff, the latest diagnostic and treatment technologies, a state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility and more. It's urban-level training in a safe, friendly rural area.

University of Louisville preclinical medical students have the opportunity to spend two four-week summer sessions at the Trover Campus, working with primary care preceptors. Up to twelve students are selected to spend their third and fourth years of training in Madisonville.
