H. Garth Smith, D.M.D., M.D. is a board certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Smith is graduate of the College of Georgia School of Dentistry and graduated with honors from the University of Texas School of Medicine. He completed an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency, a general surgery internship and residency prerequisite at the University of Texas School of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Smith went on to complete an additional residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. Prior to joining Trover Health System, he served as the Section Chief of Plastic Surgery at Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, West Virginia.

Plastic Surgery Procedures

Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

An arm lift reshapes the portion of your arms from the underarm area to the elbow. This procedure reduces the excess sagging skin that droops on the upper arms and tightens the underlying tissue.

Body Lift

Dramatic weight loss from bariatric surgery or traditional dieting can result in loose and sagging skin that exercise cannot tighten. Once a patient has reached their goal weight they may require a body lift. This surgical procedure can reduce and remove the excess fat and skin as well as tighten the underlying structures.

Breast Augmentation (Augmentation Mammaplasty)

Breast Augmentation is the placement of implants into the breasts to increase fullness and/or to improve the symmetry. This cosmetic procedure is used to enlarge small breasts, restore breast volume due to pregnancy or weight loss and achieve better overall symmetry to disproportioned breasts.

Breast Lift (Mastoplexy)

Breast lift is the raising and reshaping of sagging breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning remaining tissue and nipples.

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction following mastectomy may be done by several different methods. Options include flap procedure that repositions your own muscle, fat and skin; a tissue expansion that stretches your skin to cover an implant; surgical placement of implants and/or grafting.

Breast Reduction (Mammaplasty)

Breast reduction is usually performed for physical relief rather than simply cosmetic improvement. Very large, sagging breasts that restrict their activities and cause them physical discomfort trouble most women who have the surgery. Techniques for breast reduction vary, but the most common procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision that circles the areola, extends downward, and follows the natural curve of the crease beneath the breast. Excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin is removed and the nipples and areola are moved into their new position. The skin from both sides of the breast is brought down and around the areola, shaping the new contour of the breast.

Breast Reduction * Male (Gynecomastia)

Male breast reduction is a procedure to reduce enlarged, female-like breast in men using liposuction and/or cutting out excess glandular tissue.

Carpal Tunnel Release

Carpal tunnel release improves strength and decreasing pain in patients suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The procedure resolves pain, nerve tingling, and numbness more reliably than it resolves muscle weakness.

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Ear surgery sets prominent ears back closer to the head or reduces the size of large ears.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery procedure can be done on both the upper and lower eyelids. It improves the appearance of the eyelids by treating the loose and sagging skin, removing excess fatty deposits from the upper lids and removing wrinkles and/or bags from under the eyes.

Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

Sagging or drooping in the middle of the face can create deep creases below eyelid and between the mouth and nose. Fat and poor muscle tone in the lower portion on the face, along with loose skin, can create the appearance of a "double chin." A facelift is intended to help correct these signs of aging and give a person a more rested or youthful look.

Facial Implants

Facial implants change the basic shape and balance of the face using carefully shaped implants to build up a receding chin, add prominence to cheekbones or reshape the jawline.

Forehead Lift (Browlift)

A brow lift is a procedure to improve the facial region between the upper eyelids and scalp, extending to the temples. It minimizes the appearance of lines and creases in the forehead. This procedure may be done using the traditional technique with an incision across the top of the head just behind the hairline or with the use of an endoscope, which requires 3 to 5 short incisions.

Laser Facial Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing improves cosmetic flaws such as, wrinkles, acne scars and sun-damaged skin. The face is smoothed with a laser device treats layers of damaged skin.

Liposuction (Suction-Assisted Lipectomy)

Liposuction improves body shape by removing exercise-resistant fat deposits with a tube and vacuum device. Can be performed using the tumescent technique, in which targeted fat cells are infused with saline containing solution with a local anesthetic before liposuction to reduce post-operative bruising and swelling. Common locations for liposuction include chin, cheeks, neck, upper arms, above breasts, abdomen, buttocks, hips and thighs.

Neck Lift (platysmaplasty)

A neck lift is a surgery designed to reduce the loose look of sagging skin in the neck area and under the jaw line. Some patients who complain of having a fleshy neck, "jowls", plastysma or neck "banding", or a "turkey waddle" can benefit from this procedure. Many times patients choose to have a neck lift with their face lift procedure.

Nose Refinement (Rhinoplasty and/or Septoplasty)

Rhinoplasty reshapes the nose to improve the proportion of the nose to the face. This may include techniques such as, reducing or increasing size, removing hump, changing shape of tip or bridge, narrowing span of nostrils, or changing angle between nose and upper lip. A septoplasty may also be preformed to correct breathing problems. This corrective surgical procedure is done to straighten the partition between the two nasal cavities.

Spider Vein Treatment

Treatment for spider veins will depend upon the area affected. The legs are generally treated with sclerotherapy, a solution injected into the veins. The face area is usually treated with laser or hyfercation, where vessels are cauterized.

Thigh Lift

The thigh lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to tighten the skin of the thigh and reduce sagging in the inner or outer thigh.

Thread Lift

Thread lifts are often performed in an outpatient setting. Because the procedure is minimally invasive local anesthesia is generally used. Small incisions are made in key locations and a threaded needle is inserted to lift the subcutaneous tissue and suspend the lift with the thread. The barbs on these threads will lock in place upon insertion to lift very specific areas.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the loose, sagging and protruding abdomen. Excess skin and fat are removed from the lower abdomen, and the upper abdominal skin is pulled down and tightened. The underlying muscles are also tightened in the process.

Aesthetics

Chemical Peel

A chemical peel uses a chemical solution to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin by removing its damaged outer layers. The procedure is beneficial for those with facial blemishes, wrinkles and uneven skin pigment.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a procedure performed with an abrasive wheel or brushes, to wear away the upper layers of skin and improve irregularities in the skin surface, such as acne scars or chicken pox marks.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is the use of aluminum oxide crystals, which are blown against the skin and removed, to eliminate the outer layer of the skin and stimulate growth factors.

Laser Hair Removal

Both men and women can benefit from laser hair removal. Permanent hair reduction can be achieved on most people with 3-6 treatments. The number of laser treatments required for optimal long-term benefits depends on multiple factors - hair thickness, the area treated and hair growth cycle.

Injectables
